The update released on July 29, 2026, just before Shiny Wars, is one of the biggest in years. Here is what actually changes for you.
Every encounter table rebuilt
Spawns across Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova have been comprehensively rebalanced to improve level scaling, horde hunting variety and EV training variety. In practice, many long-standing spots have changed, and seasons now drive encounters in all five regions, not just Unova.
- Sweet Scent-exclusive hordes have been added to many areas.
- Trophy Garden and the Great Marsh now have semi-random daily spawns, and Johto's Safari Zone randomization has been improved.
- Wild encounters are enabled on Sky Pillar (2F and 4F).
- Altering Cave adopts a different elemental type each day, which drives both its species and its Pickup contents; its encounter rate now matches other farming areas.
All our data has been regenerated from the client: location pages and Pokemon pages now show season, horde size and real rates per time of day. See also our seasons guide and the EV hordes by season tool.
A far richer Pokedex
The in-game Pokedex now shows actual percentage rates, split by morning / day / night, and lets you browse every season regardless of the current one. It names sub-areas (for example "Sky Pillar (2F)"), lists Honey Trees and Johto's Unown, states which form an encounter yields for formed species, and adds an advanced search plus a type matchup tab. An EV horde search is built in, unlocked after defeating the Elite 4.
Costumed Pokemon
A brand new feature: some species can now wear a costume. Currently limited to Shiny Wars 2026 rewards, costumes are purely cosmetic (species and stats are unchanged), are inherited through breeding, show on your follower and in the Dex, and appear on the GTL under their costume name. The developers promise more in the near future.
Gym puzzles become skippable
Great news for rematch runners: once a gym's badge is earned, its puzzle can be walked straight past on later visits. This covers Celadon (the trees), Saffron (the warp maze), Fuchsia (the invisible walls), Petalburg, Lavaridge, Mossdeep, Sootopolis (a path is cut through the ice) and Fortree (the ledges). A serious speed-up for the routes in our gym rematch guide.
Items and farming
- Sinnoh finally has Pickup tables: every area with wild encounters awards items themed to the area, scaled by how far into the region it sits. Johto's tables were rebuilt on the same rules, noticeably improving its reward pools.
- Apricorn trees now require visiting a healing center before they can be harvested (the one in-game day delay still applies).
A finally native client
On desktop, PokeMMO no longer requires a Java runtime: the client is built as a native application, with a noticeable performance gain. The interface follows your display's scale factor (no more blurry textures on high-density screens), and frame rate selection offers an "Auto" mode matching your display's refresh rate. Note: Windows 7 and 8.1 are no longer supported, nor is 32-bit Windows or 32-bit Linux ARM, and Intel Macs are now deprecated.
Balance changes worth knowing
- Doubles matchmaking is now BO1 instead of BO3.
- Shed Skin now activates 33% of the time (up from 30%).
- Leftovers and Black Sludge heal in Gen V order.
- Exp. Candies used at the level cap now store the excess instead of discarding it.
- Jaboca and Rowap berries no longer trigger on self-inflicted recoil damage.
