Getting started in Aniimo

Aniimo launches on September 16, 2026 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series, and on September 23 on mobile. The game is free. Here is what to understand before setting foot on the continent of Idyll, so you do not get the important decisions wrong.

The one irreversible decision: your starter

After the tutorial you must choose between Lunara (moon fox, ranged) and Helion (sun lion, melee). This choice is permanent. Good news: their stats are strictly identical, so neither is a trap. It is purely a matter of playstyle.

Where you are, and what you do there

The adventure takes place on the continent of Idyll, where you play a Pathfinder. The loop is familiar (explore, catch, raise, battle), with three notable differences compared to other games in the genre:

  • Combat is real-time, not turn-based. You move, dodge and combo yourself.
  • The world is open and seamless, with a customisable home to house your creatures.
  • Twining: you can merge with an Aniimo to embody it. Depending on the creature you run, fly or swim, opening paths that are otherwise unreachable. It is the game's signature mechanic.

The 9 elements

Every Aniimo belongs to one or more elements. Here is how they are spread across the 94 creatures revealed before launch, which hints at what you will meet most often:

Water
19 creatures
Grass
16 creatures
Rock
16 creatures
Wind
14 creatures
Dark
12 creatures
Electric
10 creatures
Fire
9 creatures
Ice
9 creatures
Holy
2 creatures

Both starters' traits mention advantageous elements, so there is a strengths and weaknesses system. The full chart has not been published before launch; we will document it as soon as the game is out.

The 5 roles: building a team that holds

Every Aniimo has a role shown on its page. This is the most useful thing to grasp early: a team of five heavy attackers falls apart fast.

RoleWhat it doesKnown creatures
DPS Deals the main damage 33
BREAK Breaks enemy guard to open damage windows 26
Support Buffs the team and weakens enemies 18
Energy Feeds the team EP to keep skills flowing 10
Healer Keeps the team alive 7

Worth noting: the BREAK role is well represented. Breaking enemy guard to open a damage window looks central to tougher fights.

Environmental forms and evolutions

Two systems to know, because they change how you explore:

  • Environmental forms. The same creature can exist in several appearances depending on place or weather, and a form can change its elements and skills. We have already catalogued 18 before launch, the most common being Prismana Form, Highland Form, Mountain Woods Form.
  • Branching evolutions. Not every line is linear: the same creature can evolve differently depending on conditions. The known example is the Helmut family, where most become Rookey but some take another path.

Every page in our Aniidex has a form selector: one click switches the whole page to that form.

Where to find your first creatures

The most populated areas among those revealed before launch, with the number of known species in each:

Nimbus Fields 12 Beast Fang Ridge 10 The Argent Strait 9 Echoback Landing 8 Crescent Bay 8 Mistwoods 7 Forest of Falling Stars 7 Sea of Flowers 7 Berylline Causeway 7 Rosetower Woods 7

What to do in your first hours

  1. Pick your starter knowingly (our comparison): ranged and self-healing with Lunara, melee and area damage with Helion.
  2. Catch broadly: your starter is Holy, so you will quickly need other elements to avoid getting stuck.
  3. Balance roles instead of stacking DPS: plan for at least one BREAK role and a way to heal or regain EP.
  4. Try Twining with every new creature: some unlock movement (flight, swimming) that opens up areas.
  5. Watch the weather and locations: that is what triggers environmental forms.

This guide is based on official data published before launch (an NDA-free closed beta and the official index). Some values may change at release: we will rebuild everything from the game's final data on September 16. Meanwhile, browse our Aniidex and its 94 entries.
