Shiny hunting in PokeMMO

PokeMMO shiny odds

The base rate is 1 / 30,000, much rarer than in the mainline games. It can be improved by 10% with an active Donator Status, and by another 10% with a Shiny Charm. With both, you reach 1 / 24,000, the best permanent rate available.

• The Shiny Charm link bonus (5%) only applies to link members who did not activate their own Charm; multiple Charms in the same link don't stack.
• Exception: during the Christmas event, a seasonal Shiny Rate Bonus can beat 1 / 24,000.

Hunting methods

• Hordes (Sweet Scent), the most efficient method: each Pokemon in a horde rolls its own shiny chance, so a horde of 5 gives you 5 rolls per encounter. Use a Pokemon with Sweet Scent to trigger hordes at will.
• Single encounters (grass, surfing, fishing), fewer rolls per hour, but these are the only encounters where a shiny can be a Secret Shiny (see below).
• Alpha Pokemon, Alphas can be shiny, with the same odds as any regular encounter. Keep an eye out for active Alphas and swarms to multiply your encounters.
• Legendaries, permanently obtainable legendaries (like Heatran) and roamers (Suicune, Zapdos) can be shiny. Mythicals obtained via Summons cannot.

Secret Shiny

A Secret Shiny is an even rarer variant with a different particle effect. When a shiny appears in a non-Sweet-Scent encounter, it has a 1 in 16 chance of being a Secret Shiny. That's the main argument for single encounters over hordes, despite the lower throughput.

Shiny breeding

• A shiny cannot breed with a non-shiny.
• Breeding two shinies guarantees a shiny egg, that's how you pass good IVs onto a shiny (see the IV breeding guide).
• Breeding a Secret Shiny with a shiny guarantees a Secret Shiny egg.

Boosts and events

• Donator Status,+10% shiny rate while active (on top of its other perks).
• Shiny Charm,+10% for you, +5% for link partners without their own Charm.
• Mysterious Balls, earned during seasonal events since 2022, they have a high base chance to contain a shiny, and Donator/Charm bonuses apply to them too.
• Shiny Wars, the annual team competition (3rd edition, August 1-28, 2026): the best time of the year to hunt as a group.

Before you hunt

• Shiny lock: a suspicious account (hunting heavily before doing any story content) can get locked out of shiny encounters. Complete at least one region (level 100 cap) to be safe everywhere.
• Prepare a dedicated catcher: False Swipe to leave the shiny at 1 HP, a status inflicter (Spore, Thunder Wave) and a proper stock of balls.
• Scout your spots with the Pokedex and the location pages: encounter density, available hordes and levels.
